Anal Glands

Anal Glands (Dogs)

Many mammals, including cats and dogs, have scent glands situated around their anus.

Anal glands that become overfull have a higher risk of becoming infected and/or

impacted. You can usually start to smell a fishy odour and they may scoot their bottom along the floor - this is a good indicator that they may need their anal glands emptied. Full Anal Glands or impactions can be due to diet and advice can be given on this also.

Healthy anal glands express, or empty, this fluid when the dog has a bowel movement. Unfortunately, some anal glands don’t work as they should because of inherited malformations, or because of a history of poor-quality foods that produce poor-quality bowel movements. If the anal glands don’t empty properly, they can become impacted, making bowel movements difficult or painful, and potentially leading to infections or abscesses.

During The appointment I can attend to your Dog and rectify this unpleasant situation, I can also give dietary advice where applicable to help prevent reoccurrence.

The whole procedure will be done as always with care, compassion, and empathy.

You can find copies of my formal qualifications and insurance on our FAQ's page. I also carry a valid DBS check.
